One look at this and I'm sure some of you might say "WTH?". This is probably the best thing that I've ever put into my sketchbook. I tried to do something different than just the plain character standing in front of you giving some cheesy smile. Naw, I wanted something dynamic and bold. Something like a hippie with heads to construct his hands.....okay, that's exactlly what it is. This is something that I did using my all time favorite character that I created one day during my lunch our in freshmen high school. I actually got the idea of a hippie from watching an episode of "Freakazoid". There was a hippie street performer in one segment and combined with my history class going through the Vietnam War, I was inspired to create my now beloved character, "Hippie Dude".
I didn't really start out by drawing Hippie Dude, but rather the top head in his middle finger. That was supposed to be a bust drawing of me(which looks nothing like me actually), but I got bored and came up with something a bit more creative and fun. I then moved over to sketching out Hippie Dude's form and just went to town on his hand. There's a few heads in there that aren't my origninals and the rest are either caricatures of my friends or something I used to fill space. When I was done with that, I looked at it and felt that it needed more. So I added a background which consists of a spiral with a different design in each arm. It took many english and math classes to come up with every different one(I doodled alot in school). Then, two weeks after the start of one simple sketch, I ended up with what you see now. It kinda looks like some kind of vortex emitting from his hand of heads, which is why I dubed it "Hippie Power". It reminds me of a "Where's Waldo?" book. Many techniques of design patterns I learned in my art classes I used in here also. Sorry that it's so big. I had it scanned 3 yrs ago and I haven't done anything to fix its size and there's this dark shadow on the side because this is still in my sketchbook, but I guess now you'll be able to take a look at some of the detail I tried to hide. Have fun looking for my pen name!
There's alot of detail that went into this, so I used a mechanical pencil for those and a regular No.2 pencil for the shading, along with smudging alittle. Ah...good ol' No.2 pencil. What would we do without you. I invite anyone to color it if you want and to clean it up for your own enjoyment.
